Volleyballs aren’t Enough
If you’ve seen the movie “Castaway” then you know Wilson. Just in case you missed the blockbuster here it is in a nutshell: Tom Hanks plays Chuck Noland, a Fed Ex systems engineer who, along with a bunch of packages, washes up on a remote island after surviving a plane crash. Chuck’s loneliness drives him to create an imaginary friend out of a Wilson volleyball he found in one of the packages.
A few years ago, I actually bought a Wilson volleyball and asked my son to recreate Chuck’s “Wilson.” Then Wilson helped me with a devotional at a Teen MOPS (mothers of preschoolers) group. Everyone recognized Wilson immediately. Everyone thought that loneliness was Chuck’s biggest problem. And everyone loudly admitted that they experience loneliness too.
Then I read Romans 8:38-39.
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
In our world of social networking, emails, and texting we have easier, quicker access to more people all the time. But loneliness still runs rampant. People still often feel like they are trying to make it all by themselves. We lack real connection even in the church. God created us with the need for companionship. With the need for other people. But mostly, with the need for Him.
But, if you’re a believer, if you belong to God through a personal relationship with Jesus, you are never alone. You are constantly in the presence of God and His love for you. Even death cannot separate you from Jesus and His love. Nothing in this life can separate you from Jesus and His love. Nothing in the spiritual realm can separate you from Jesus and His love. You can’t travel far enough to be separated from Jesus and His love.
Absolutely nothing can separate you from Jesus and His love. And that’s awesome, because volleyballs just aren’t enough.
Isn’t is awesome that no matter where we go, Jesus will never leave us and His love is a constant in our lives? I am very thankful for that.
