What is Your Name?
My name is Debbie. What’s your name? That’s usually the first thing we say when we’re introduced to somebody. It’s amazing how important our names are since we carry them with us through life. I was born in the day when Debbie Reynolds and Deborah Kerr were well known for their movies. But today Debbie isn’t a common name chosen for children.
I work with three and four year old children. At this age, they are learning to spell and write their names. They learn the sounds each letter makes. We teach them to use the top, middle and bottom lines as they learn to write each letter. It’s important for them to know and write their names.
I bought a small laminated card I found in a Christian bookstore with my name written on it. It said that Debbie is a seeker. At the time, I thought that sounded like me. After all, I love to read and learn. I enjoy doing Bible studies and writing down the lessons I learn in my journals. But there’s another name that I’m looking forward to receiving. Did you know that God has a special name for each one of us?
Revelation 2:17 (NIV) says:
Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.
As a Christian and follower of Jesus Christ, my goal is to grow to become more like Jesus. I will never reach perfection in this life but how thankful I am that His righteousness covers my sin. I have been made clean. In the meantime, He is at work purifying and refining me as I surrender all of my life to Him. At times, I’ve found this process very painful as I go through seasons of trials and difficulties. But I know that it is for my good and …His glory.
I look forward to the day when I hear the voice of God calling me by the name He has for me. He knows the plans He has for me. He knows who I am.
As you go through this life, be encouraged. God sees it all. He knows the intimate details of your life. He hears your prayers. He hears your praise. He hears your thanks. He sees your pain and struggles. And one day He will bless you with a new name. So do not lose hope! God loves you and knows your true name.
Blessings and love,

To know that we’ll have new names is unfathomable and exciting at the same time. Knowing that many things we don’t understand here would also be revealed. ..Just like those precious kids learning to write and spell out each letter of their names until they understand their names one day, I can’t imagine the excitement growing in their hearts each day. What great analogy to help us grasp.
May we reflect the Name of our Lord Jesus as we continue in our journeys here in this foreign land. I like the meaning of your name. I pray that for you today. .. to always seek for His truth. Blessings and love to you sister. ..
It is exciting, isn’t it? I love how you wrote about our journey in this foreign land as that really is what it is.
Always have considered how God changed names throughout the Bible, giving new names to people as their lives were changed….I often wonder what my name would be. Could I be called Grace or Hope? How about Charity, am I exhibiting the love of Christ? It’s always something to consider. Christ living in me, how has that changed me? Is it worthy of a name change?
The Bible tells us that God has a name for each one of us. I am excited to discover what mine is too.
Thank you for the reminder that God has already picked a new name for us. Although I really like my name, I cannot wait to hear the name God has given me.
I love your name Iris too but also look forward to God’s name for each of us.
What a blessed assurance, a new name! I love the last paragraph. Blessings Debbie for a wonderful Thanksgiving!
I love to know the meaning of names…and how wonderful to hear the name the Lord has for each of us.
Blessings & Aloha!
Have a very Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving!
Your post reminds me of the song “I Can Only Imagine” about that moment when we come face to face with God. I try to imagine that moment when He will call my name and the feeling is so overwhelming that I do not know how to put it into words.
