God’s Agents on Earth

I started out this weekend with a to-do list and ended up not getting much of it done.

I did (however) do a topical search on the relationship that our Lord Jesus Christ has with His Father.

Over and over, Scripture tells us that Christ was sent – He was the agent of the Father here on earth. It strikes me that we are also heirs with Christ – God’s agents here on earth.

For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. (John 12:49)

We are told to go into the world and to preach the gospel to every living creature…to guard our tongues, to keep ourselves from empty talk.

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Col 3:17)

“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31)

We belong to Christ and whatever we do, it reflects on Him.

Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ (John 8:54)

It is the same way with us. We know people who adore being in the limelight (or even center stage). This is not bad, but when when the stage is the goal, not glorifying Christ, it can become an idol…a very bad thing.

so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Phil. 2:10-11)

Even in the end, on the day of judgment, even confessing the name of Christ…it is to the glory of God the Father!

We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.(Romans 6:4)

This is our hope: newness of life. The resurrection of the dead. Eternity with our Lord Jesus Christ.

but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope. (Heb 3:6)

We are saved, not because we are good, but because God is good. Our hope is in Christ and He is faithful.

I totally agree with the “We are saved, not because we are good, but because God is good” piece. Like Job, I can only live to praise him because he is God and I was made for that exact purpose.

Our hope: newness of life! What an incredible gift and most often, overlooked. I am thankful that everyday brings a NEW DAY!! With our family and friends and even ourselves, we can start new!

Wow, a powerful thought that we are God’s agents here on earth. That topic ties in so perfectly with our Pastor’s message on Sunday about bringing God to the “outsiders” (those who are not in the church). I feel blessed to see God knitting the pieces of my life together.

    God bless!

Col. 3:17 is a verse I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. My husband and I both lost our jobs recently. (I knew my position was ending for a couple months – his came as a complete surprise to us.) As we’ve been wondering what it is we are supposed to “do” next I keep coming back to this verse. What we do doesn’t matter as long as “whatever we do” we are doing for the Lord. Whatever he brings us, we are to do it in the name of Jesus, giving thanks to the Father. Thanks for the confirmation that we’re on the right track!

Amen to that – not for the things I do, but what accomplished at the cross.
Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful Scripture passages with us, Ellen.

    Inspiring!
I always dread to, by mistake, take the glory upon myself whenever i do something in public, speak, teach etc. I wlways consciously remind myself that it is to the glory of God and all about Him. U have discovered that you have to consciously remind yourself before and after an assignment. But i guess it all come back to “whose at the throne of your heart?”
