Sisters

She was a surprise addition to our family when my brother was ten and I was nearly fourteen. I rocked her. I read her Sleeping Beauty. By the time we shared a room, I was a teen with homework, makeup, hair rollers and dates. She followed me everywhere and learned to charm the fellows I dated for chewing gum, life savers and teddy bears. Having two older siblings made her clever. She posed and primped, whirled and bobbed her way into our hearts in spite of the fact she bit with a vengeance. One GI at our church in the Philippines even built her a swing set. She was traumatized when I left for university, even more upset when I married.

Our relationship has matured in the last two decades. Our faith, our love for education and the care of our parents bind us.  Today she “science-talks” me through medical advice, and I give her tips on country cooking. She knows my backstory  from a daughter’s and a mother’ s point of view. Like me, she is the mother of two grown men.  I cannot imagine my life without her.

I have other sisters that encourage and inspire me as well. The writers on this website who come from varying backgrounds and addresses are sisters in my precious family of faith. They lift me up with their “take” on God’s Word. They filter Biblical truth through their varied experiences in life and distill it into practical living for God.  Like the sister who shares my DNA, they live and breathe for families, called careers, churches, but most importantly for our God. We stand (metaphorically) shoulder to shoulder against doubt and unbelief. I know their power.

Once, before my father came to Christ, my mother agreed with a precious Sunday School class of such sisters for his salvation. They agreed in prayer he would come to know Christ before we received orders to move again. On the very last Sunday we attended that church, he responded to God’s call. It was the beginning for a new way of life for our family. Today my sisters and I agree for the needs of this nation and this broken world.  Matthew 18:19 says,” … if two of you on earth agree (harmonize together, make a symphony together) about whatever [anything and everything] they may ask, it will come to pass and be done for them by my Father in heaven” (AMP).

Lord, we affirm that our Savior still heals and delivers. We agree together for our lost family members. We lift up sisters across the continents we have not visited who need rescue, comfort and provision. We agree that you can meet the needs in their families. You are mighty. You deserve our praise.

I love this post! I didn’t grow up with sisters, but I’m so thankful for the spiritual sisters that I’ve had along the way. Even though we have not met face to face, the writing team here on Laced with Grace have served as my sisterhood for the past 11 years. (WOW-it’s been 11 years!)
