A Reluctant Leader

He had a royal screw up. Killed someone in “righteous” anger, without really thinking through the consequences. So, he split. He ran far away and found new friends and family; started his life over again. He was probably pretty content watching the sheep in the peace of the desert, coming home each night to his wife and family.

And God came crashing into his self-constructed haven.

I can almost hear Moses stuttering when God told him there was something big He had in mind for Moses. “W-w-w-w-what??”

So, Moses proceeds to tell God He must have the wrong man for the job. There is no way God really intended someone like *me* to do something so big, so overwhelming, so far beyond my abilities and comfort zone. He drug in his feet multiple times as God unfolded the plan for God to use Moses.

Somewhere along the way Moses began to realize that God wasn’t going to put him in this position of leadership all alone. First of all, none of it was really in human power anyways-it was ALL GOD. When Moses stayed focused on God’s work, things went smoothly. Second, God gave Moses partners in leadership-Aaron, and then 70 elders to handle some of the work.

I find it encouraging to know that someone like Moses (!) struggled to follow God’s big plans for his life. Have you ever felt God asking you to do something way out of your comfort zone? It can be downright scary, but God won’t leave you alone. He will bring people alongside to encourage, hold your hands up in prayer, and help carry your burdens. But, even more than that, if God is asking you to do something, He really means that HE is going to do something, and you just get to be a part of it. He wants to use us and work through us to do amazing, powerful things, but we have to stop stuttering and start saying “yes, Lord.”

If God is calling you to step out of your comfort zone today, can I pray for you? Let’s find our strength in God together today and follow Moses’ example. Even if we are a bit nervous and reluctant, we can trust our God.
