The Antidote to Worry

Proverbs 3: 5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

We sat huddled in our tent at the base of towering cliffs counting the seconds until the thunder.  The storm came on quickly and we sent the kids to their tent while we snuggled in to listen to the thunderstorm and pattering of raindrops.

But the typical mountain storm was closer and more severe than we had anticipated. The wind whipped through the canyon, and trees cracked under the pressure, toppling into the winding road leading away from the camp.  We had no idea that the lightning strikes were going to be a mere 1,000 feet from our humble campground, but we just stayed put.

Pretty soon, a little voice cried out above the wind, “Where is the opening to this tent?”  One terrified child joined us in our tent, but the other two tried to tough it out for a while longer.  As the lightning illuminated the night sky and the thunder shook the ground, we all huddled together and daddy prayed quietly.

The Lord put His hand over our tent, protecting us from the falling trees and powerful lightning strikes as we put our trust in Him.  He was our help and our shield (Psalm 115:11).

When crazy weather or health issues hit, it becomes obvious that we really have no other choice than to put our trust in the Lord.  But in everyday events we often forget that we still desperately need to trust in Him.  He will bless us (Psalm 115:13) when we come under His protection and we lean on Him.  When do I put my trust in God?

When I’m working on big project at work

When I drop my kids off at camp

When I’m driving in bad traffic

When I blow and I need God’s grace (i.e. every day!)

When things at church are a mess

When nothing seems to be going right

When I’m trying to make decisions about moving, jobs, etc.

When I get up each morning

Psalm 37:7  Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret…
