Be Tenacious

The year was 1999. I had just bought my first car. It so happened that in the same year my 60 year old mother decided to follow her dream of learning to drive. Hence it was a given that sooner or later she was going to get behind the wheel of my car. (cue scary music)

It was after a day of shopping we started the hour long drive home. Half way there I decided to let Mommy drive, after all she needed the practice and I had a book I really wanted to start reading.

It started out well until we were approaching the town before our hometown. I looked up from my book just as we approached a deep curve in the road and realized my mother wasn’t slowing down. I started to tell her but it was too late, she’d taken the corner too quickly and was already on the opposite side the road heading straight for a pine tree.

“Mommy, press the brakes, press the brakes!” I screamed. Fortunately, she pressed the brakes not a moment too soon. We ended up a little ways in the bush and just a hair breath away from a pine tree. Our guardian angels worked overtime that day.

My mother was a bit shaken up so I took the wheel, book now forgotten. It was a long time before I was able to convince her to drive my car again. However, she did get back behind the wheel and she did in that same year get her driver’s license.

11 As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. James 5:11 (NIV)

As I look back at this incident it reminds me to, be tenacious, to persevere even in the face of difficulties. Sometimes we start out strong, we’re motivated and excited as we work to accomplish our goals.  However over time as we face challenges and disappointments we wrestle with whether or not we should give up. But, your dream is worth fighting for. It’s worth pushing through the obstacles you encounter along the way knowing that it will only come to pass if you keep working towards it.

As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered…  I want to be known as one who persevered, what about you?

I too want to persevere, but I know that I can do it only with the Lord’s help. Thank you for the reminder to keep going toward the goal or dream.
