Blessings in Disguise

Sometimes what we think to be annoyances can very well turn out to be blessings in disguise. Those times we are late, or held up from being where we think we should be at the time we think we should be there, can end up being God’s plan for us all along. I was reminded of this over the past weekend as my husband and I went out of town for an overnight get-away.

We were both exhausted from our typical Friday schedules when we met in town (from opposite directions) to drive together to our hotel. We had no set plans other than eating at a particular restaurant for dinner. So after checking in and unloading our bags, we walked to the restaurant nearby, to find out there was a huge line and a 45-55 minute wait! I felt if I sat down to wait I would surely fall asleep right there on the bench outside, but down we both went anyway. The 45 minutes seemed like hours, but finally we were seated next to a window overlooking the river.

While I drooled over the menu, I couldn’t help but notice the lights on the bridge outside as they blinked on, then the Pyramid building across the river lit up, and the sky began to display a brilliant show of colors – red, pink, and yellow as the sun began to set on the horizon. It was then that I realized what a blessing it was that we were delayed in our plans, for all along God had the best seat in the house prepared for us, but we needed to wait for it to be available. He also had a show planned, and instead of messing with the whole world by changing the time of the sunset, He decided to mess with our schedule instead. We didn’t have any idea He had a dinner and show planned!

A very wise friend said to me just before I pulled out of the church parking lot the day before, “Live in the moment.” Those words came back to me as I sat there over dinner, in awe at how God’s plan had trumped mine…and so thankful to Him that it did!

If we take time to look for them (to be still and know He is God), we will be surprised at all the blessings placed around us disguised as something else. His plans for us are better…much better than our own. Why is it so hard for us to let Him run the show? For it is then that He reveals to us His blessings in disguise!
