Can you just do it for me?

Today, Melanie from THEFRUITSOFTHESPIRIT is our guest writer.

Have you ever asked God to make something go away?  Maybe an encounter with someone you knew would be difficult, a task at work you didn’t feel prepared to handle, or something much larger like pain due to the loss of a loved one.

Have you ever prayed, “Dear Lord, please make this situation go away?”  or “Please, God… don’t let it hurt so much!”

We’ve all been there.  We’ve all asked God to take something away or to “handle it” for us.  And, we’ve all been right there as God continued to lead us straight into whatever that situation is that we are trying so hard to avoid.

With our children, we know the importance of letting them experience many things they may find difficult or just don’t want to do.  It’s part of growing and maturing.  It is part of becoming the people that God wants them to be.

Last spring my son came home from school one day telling me about an assignment he had been given that day.  He was supposed to walk the neighborhood and collect leaves for a project they were doing the next day.  He explained what he needed to do and we decided we would set out after dinner on our leaf hunt.  It then got quiet for a few minutes.  After a bit, he said, “Mom, would you just do it for me?”   After a brief exchange on why it was important for him to do it himself, I responded by telling him, “I won’t do it for you, but I will go along with you.”

A few months later I thought of this incident and was reminded how similar this is to the way God responds when we ask Him to take care of something for us.  He knows that in order to grow and in order to draw nearer to Him that He must allow us to experience many difficult situations in our lives.

Although He must let us experience all these situations, He does promise that He will stay with us as we walk down the difficult roads in our life.  Just as we tell our children, “I won’t do it for you, but I will go along with you”, God does the same and is right there with us through it all.

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.”  Psalm 23:4

“…for He Himself has said, ‘I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,’ so that we confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid.  What shall man do to me?’”  Hebrews 13:5-6

So true, Melanie. If often don’t want to grow; we are just quite comfortable. It is good to know that He will always be there.

Thank you for sharing with all of us today Melanie, I always enjoy what you write and this certainly fits that. It’s so hard during those difficult times that God has a reason and purpose.

    God bless,

Thanks, Melanie. I needed this reminder today; isn’t it funny how I didn’t get around to reading this post until the very day I needed it?
