Creation Is Telling
I expect to see them any day. Perhaps they are waiting for the absolute promise of warm weather – after all, they are predicting rain and cold temperatures for the latter part of this week. However, I know they will come. They arrive every March without fail.
I took the feeder down in September, when it was apparent they had begun their journey south. It is hard to imagine such tiny creatures traveling hundreds of miles to spend the winter months in another country.
We had one as an over-night visitor one summer. I noticed him clinging to the feeder as the others flew at him. He finally fell to the ground, and we rescued him. His tiny wing had somehow been injured, and he couldn’t fly. I couldn’t imagine how he would survive, but we made him a tiny bed in a little box and offered sugar-water.
I called the local wild life sanctuary in the morning, and a kind voice assured me that yes, they could help him. We brought that tiny bit of life to them, and they patched him up.
Seeing that little hummingbird up close, feeling the fragility of him, the nearly weightless little body, made the long journey they take every year seem all that more miraculous.
I know they will return. I don’t even have to hang up the feeder. One day soon, I will see them hovering around the spot on the porch where the feeder usually hangs. How do they know? Who showed them the way back, or told them it was time to come? How did they find their way the very first time they made the journey south?
It is all a miraculous mystery or perhaps not a mystery at all. They have a Heavenly Father who watches over them, who carefully orchestrates their coming and going. Does He whisper a little reminder into their tiny ears when it is time to leave? Does He give them directions for the very best way to travel? Does He protect them and shelter them along the way? I like to imagine that He does.
I wonder how it is that anyone can look in the face of the miraculous and not believe in a wise, creative, loving God.
Every spring there are these gentle reminders of a Father who watches over every detail of our lives. The world around us fairly bursts with miracles of new life. We see the evidence of a God who cares for us with a love that knows no bounds, if only we have eyes to see.
“For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see His invisible qualities – His eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.”
Romans 1:20 (NLT)
“The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display His craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make Him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world.”
Psalm 19: 1-4

Amen, such a lovely post dear.
Linda, thank you for sharing with us today. As I was reading your devotion today I was thinking of that old great song “His eyes are on the sparrow” – isn’t it comforting to know that God has the whole world (even the birds) in the palm of His hand! -Blessings, Laurie
We did the same for a sparrow once. Took him in overnight and then took him to the local wildlife center. We too feed the birds, but so far not the hummingbirds. Many of our friends say we should.
Isn’t the migration of birds a marvel?
Loved this post, Linda.
You are right, Linda. God does know our path of our life — all is well orchestrated for us — no chances 🙂 I just have to be reminded (like your post is one reminder) that God knows where we are going — I just have to trust…
Thank you for the gentle reminder…
I really love that verse from Romans. I have wondered too how the animals know.
Hi Linda,
Girl, we have them year round. I have a giant feeder in the back yard and a smaller one in front. I also feed the finches, sparrows and even doves with seed in my side yard. I watch and their beauty brings praises to my lips over God’s creation. Neat, neat post. God bless.
i KNEW that was going to be Psalm 19! It’s one of my favorites! Great post – i’ve never really thought about migration, but you certainly have a good point!!
Beautiful post, Linda.
I too am in awe of how they now where to return. It won’t be long and they will be looking in the window at me to herald their arrival. Then I’ll put the feeders back out.
What an amazing God we have.
