Distance does not make the heart grow fonder

You’ve heard that old saying, “Distance makes the heart grow fonder.”  Well, I’d like to make a case against this proposition.

Time with God

Micah and Nana

I’m a first-time grandmother. Micah just turned six months old. He and his mommy and daddy live four hours away. It had been a month since I’d seen him and I couldn’t stand it. So last week I hopped in the car and headed north to Dallas. I spent four glorious days reading books, playing airplane, and snuggling with my little chunky monkey.

I really thought the visit would hold me for a while. Maybe even until they come for Thanksgiving. But you know what I discovered? I miss Micah more now than before I went for a visit. Seeing him only makes me want to see him more.

How can that be? Maybe because I found out how sweet and wonderful he is. Maybe because I had so much fun. Maybe because he smiles at me and my Nana heart melts. But the more time I spend with Micah, the more time I want to spend with Micah.

Hmm. I think there may be some spiritual truth in here as well. Have you ever noticed that when you miss a few days spending time with God you start to have less desire to spend time with Him. The opposite is true as well. When we regularly spend time with Him, our desire for Him increases. We begin to experience how wonderful He is. We want more and more of the peace and joy we find in His presence. Our heavenly Father smiles at us and our hearts melt.

Do you have little desire to spend time with God? One of the best solutions is to spend time with God. Experience His grace and goodness. Get lost in His love. Then you’ll never want to be apart again.

Have you found this to be true in your own life? What do you experience in your time with God that most draws you back to Him?

So true, Kathy; if I miss days not spending time in His presence I get very anxious. His Word gives me comfort and peace.

Your grandson is so precious; I would miss him too if he were my grandson.

Great post Kathy! I also have a grandbaby that is 6 hours away and my heart longs to see her sometimes. Each time I hold her or play with her, my heart longs even more for her. Oh how I wish I had such a longing for my Lord sometimes. It must hurt his heart even more so than our grandmothers hearts hurt for our babies. You reall blessed me today with your words. 🙂
