Don’t Give Up

Have you ever had a dream you’ve felt like giving up on? Maybe it’s a dream you’ve had for a long time and you think the time for accomplishing that dream has long passed. I was thinking about letting go of a dream lately as I weighed the pros and cons, whether it was still what I wanted and whether it was still doable. As I thought about it my mind went on my mother. She had a more tenacious spirit than anyone I ever knew.

For all of my childhood and most of my adult life my mother was chauffeured by my dad or one of her children after we all grew up. She always wanted to learn to drive but never did anything about it. However, when she was about 60 years old after having been chauffeured her entire life she decided she wanted to take the plunge and learn to drive. It wasn’t easy for her, never having driven before but after several months of weekly lessons she was the proud holder of a driver’s license and within a year the owner of a brand new car.

As I thought about her, I thought about my dream. She had wanted to drive for many years but had never taken the initiative to do so. It wasn’t until she stepped out and worked towards it that she was able to successfully accomplish her dream.

Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant.
If they watch every cloud, they never harvest. Ecclesiastes 11:4 (NLT)

Sometimes in life we want to accomplish certain things but we are waiting for the perfect time to start on our project. However, times will probably never be perfect. There may never be enough money or enough time. But when we step out on faith God meets us where we are and helps us to accomplish those very dreams that he has given us. One of my mother’s favorite sayings was, “little is much if God is in it.” What dreams has he laid on your heart? Don’t give up on them, our God, the dream giver is able to help you accomplish your dreams.

WOW! You just spoke my heart. I have had a dream that I have tried to fulfill several times but failed. I’ve carried this dream in my heart since I was 14 or 15. I dream of having a equine facility that brings children in that are abused abandoned or just in need of love and teach them about horses and most of all about how God loves them. I don’t want to charge these children for this service and I don’t want to get rich. I have failed at my attempts I almost wonder if I will ever accomplish this for the Lord. Thank you for reminding me God placed that desire in my heart and he will allow me to make this dream come alive because it is his desire for my life.

Little is much —if God is in it—-labor not for wealth or fame…there’s a crown and you can win it…if you trust…in Jesus name….
Wow, Bernadine, I love that old song. I may not have the words exactly right…but I SO NEEDED this message! I have had “many” things on my heart (or dreams)…and just keep waiting for the right time—not really knowing what I am looking for. I will persevere to do His will….down each avenue He opens…because I know His timing is right. I plunge ahead with my dreams…I feel Him calling!
Thank you sister-in-Christ for this “TIMELY” message. Honey, your timing was right on target. This one was for me.
    God bless you!

This is such a great devotional Bernadine. I am now a year older than your mother was when she realized her dream. I have sometimes felt that I am past the point of fulfilling dreams, but I know you are right. Some of the greatest things were accomplished by people well into old age. And your Mother is right about God making the difference. Thank you for such an encouraging word!!

I am so glad you have shared a little about your Mom…Although I have never met her (this side of heaven), I love her. She is a great example that you can achieve much if you trust God with the out-come 🙂

    Thank you for sharing.

    Be blessed today and always…

PS: no worries about posting late – it happens…

This is such a great post. It truly ministered to me today. I am struggling with a dream that I know God has placed within my heart. Like so many others, I become impatient because God’s timing is not our timing. Thank you for your encourgaing words today.

    Blessings to you!

Never to late to post a post about dreams! I believe that God has implanted our “dream component” within each one of us. He authors our need for more…

    more excellence.
    more life.
    more becoming.

I, too, have a dream. I’m not sure it will find its colors with exactly the palate I would choose, but God is painting even now, and I am content to leave the brush in his hands.

    Bernadine,

Wow, and you wrote this fantastic post in minutes. amazing.

Bernadine, as I read this and the comments I just rejoice that our Lord, empowers us to reach for the dreams He gives us. No matter what age, no matter what the circumstances or the seemingly insurmountable mountains standing in the way. With God ALL things are possible. Awesome!

Love posts like this that challenge us to persue God and his dreams for our lives. His dreams always involve touching lives. So what are we waiting for?

I say step into the flood waters and watch him part the river.

    Thanks! Loved this.
