Ears to Hear and Eyes to See

Do we have seeing eyes and hearing ears? Those two things are the doors to our understanding and our hearts. When Jesus speaks to us do we hear Him? When He works in our lives do we see Him?

“That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. Then he told them many things in parables, saying:”… Matt. 13:1-3

The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?” Matt. 13:10

Jesus answered them –

“This is why I speak to them in parables:

Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.” Matt. 13:13

He was there with them, and they didn’t really see Him. He was speaking to them, and they didn’t hear Him; His message went unheeded. They were looking for Him to come in a different form, to look and sound differently…to be something else. All the time He was saying, “I am here!”

Emanuel, God with us…but they didn’t see Him right there in front of them.

He doesn’t come in the way we usually expect, so we must be alert and willing to see Him in the way He comes. His voice is soft and gentle. If we are to hear Him above the noise of this world we have to be still and listen intently. We must open the written Word and read it, so we will recognize the voice of the Living Word when He speaks.

We must keep a quiet heart and protect it from becoming calloused with the cares of this world. We who trust in Him have His Holy Spirit within us, but to hear that inner voice above the beating of our own hearts, we must be still and listen to His whispers.

Jesus doesn’t use parables and riddles with His own. He wants us to understand Him and to learn from Him. He is here with us right now in whatever our day brings. Do we have eyes open to Him; do we see Him working in the details?

Do we have eyes that see and ears that hear?

“But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.” Matt. 13:16

What is His voice speaking to you today? Where are you seeing evidence of His presence in your life?

I am learning along with you – how to listen, how to see.

So true, Charlotte. Sometimes we do not hear and see, because we are just too busy with living life.

I pray that the Lord gives me eyes to see and ears to hear.
