God is our Rock

Recently my husband and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary.  We decided to have our picture made and as we posed for the photographer she asked us, “What is the key to such a lasting relationship?” I saw this as an opportunity to share with this young woman not only about my relationship with my husband, but also my relationship with God.

I replied, “Communication, unconditional love, but most of all building our marriage upon a foundation of faith in God.” We continued to have a sweet conversation about our marriage relationship and our relationship with God.

As I thought about this encounter, I recalled the scripture found in Matthew 7: 24-27 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.  Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”

In our 50 years of marriage we have experienced those floodwaters and beating winds, but because the foundation of our relationship is God, the solid Rock, we have experienced the blessings God promises when we love God, trust God and obey God.

Many things have changed in the past 50 years. Our telephones were connected with wires and had rotary dials. We had to get up to change the channel on our black and white TV. We used typewriters and erasable bond paper so we could erase our mistakes. A dish was something you put your food on, not on your roof. Belts were used to hold up your pants, not to use in a car, and the front seat of a car was a bench that usually held three people. We brought our babies home in our arms, not in a car seat. Our meals were cooked in ovens and range tops, not in microwaves. We looked at the moon but had no idea someone would actually set foot upon it. We wrote letters on paper and sent them in the mail and text was something that a book had on its pages. A mouse was something that you didn’t want in your house. You had to start your car with a key in the ignition. Paper maps were an essential aid while traveling. If you had a hole in your jeans you sewed a patch on it.  An apple was a tasty fruit, not a computer. And I am sure some who read this could add to the list.

But in the last 50 years and from the beginning of creation, one thing has not changed. God is the solid Rock. God is strong, He is our provider, He is our protection, He is unchanging and His love endures forever.

Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken. My victory and honor come from God alone. He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me. Psalm 62:5-7 (NLT)

“The Lord lives! Praise to my Rock! May God, the Rock of my salvation, be exalted!

2 Samuel 22:47 (NLT)

Happy anniversary, Carol. What a great achievement. Yes, if God is the center of our life, we can overcome every obstacle we may encounter.
