Guidance

There is a stretch of highway between our home and town that has the unhappy reputation of being one of the most congested traffic areas in our city. On an ordinary day, in order to get where we are going on time, we must always allow extra time for getting through those few miles of bumper to bumper traffic. On a not so ordinary day, it is impossible to know how long it will take.
Last Tuesday was one of those extraordinary days. While we were in town, tropical storm Hermine blew in with 40 to 50 mile an hour winds and torrential rains. One of the casualties of the storm was the succession of traffic lights on that highway. Needless to say, it played havoc with the rush-hour traffic. A drive that normally takes us twenty minutes took an hour and a half.
As we inched our way toward home, I couldn’t help but think how much easier it would have been if there had only been someone there to direct traffic; someone in authority who could guide the cars through safely and quickly; someone we trusted.
I can easily apply this to my own life. There are seasons when there is the illusion that everything is going along just fine, and I tend to become a bit self-reliant.
But when the storms come, as they inevitably do, and suddenly things are not at all as they should be I quickly realize that I need Someone to guide me safely through. There are circumstances through which I simply cannot make it on my own. I look to the One who has promised never to forsake me, to help me and guide me, and He is always there.

“The Lord says, ‘I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.”
Psalm 32:8

He has given us His Word to guide us, His Spirit to teach us and His precious Son to make a way for us.

“No one who has not tried it would believe how many difficulties are cleared out of a man’s road by the simple act of trying to follow Christ.”
Alexander Maclaren

It is so true that when we follow His guidance, the road of life seems less congested.

Thank you so much for sharing these comforting words.

Great post. I need to read that quote again to have it sink in. Too many times I have gone off that path and followed “rabbit trails”…God’s path is the best path. Thank you for the reminder.

i really like your devo…my original thought was how easy it is for us to get so upset over the traffic as well…the typical road rage over something that is completely out of our control and how we do that too when the storms come into our lives…then spent time and energy trying to fix it ourselves…before we put the blinker on and turn to the one directing traffic.

Excellent thoughts, Linda, that I can certainly relate to. I think those times of testing are precious as they really strengthen my faith and remind me of His presence. Thank you!

Linda, what a good example that I can certainly relate. How thankful I am that we are not alone. The Lord knows even ahead of time what will happen. Our job is to trust and obey.
