Hark! the Herald Angels Sing!

Have you ever had such wonderful news about an event that just happened and couldn’t contain yourself with all of the excitement?  Can you imagine how excited the angels were as they were proclaiming the biggest event in the history of the world as they knew it?  Follow along with me as I reflect on my favorite Christmas song, “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing”.

Hark! the herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled.”Joyful all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With angelic hosts proclaim
“Christ is born in Bethlehem.
“Hark! the herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!”

When you hear this song on the radio or at church do you sing it as a “vain repetition” because it is so familiar or do you sing it afresh as the angels did 2000 years ago as they proclaimed the coming of the King?  We have a chance to sing the gospel in this song!  Let’s make a joyful noise as we commemorate our Saviour’s birth!

Luke 2:10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.  11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.  12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.  13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

I’ll skip the second verse of the song, not because it isn’t important, but because I don’t think any of you want to be reading all day!  🙂  The third verse of the song is my favorite because of what it means to me personally.  When I imagine Jesus in His humanity as a baby…a BABY…, I am so overwhelmed by the fact that Jesus left a home in heaven, to become one of the most helpless creatures on earth – and He did it for me. (Phi 2:7-9) I don’t even like leaving my home for a tent to camp!  He left heaven for you and for me.  Let’s get back to the song, shall we?

Hail the heav’n born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Risen with healing in His wingsMild He lays His glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.
Hark! the herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!”

Friends, this song is declaring the fulfilled prophecy of God sending His Son as a gift to the world that through Him we may have everlasting life.  We should be so moved by these words that we can’t help but sing our hearts out.  He was born and died that we may live!

He 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is the devil.

Hark! the herald angels sing.  Let the world hear us sing because…

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, the everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever.  The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. Isaiah 9:6-7

Merry Christmas to you all!

We take the kids around the neighborhood caroling – something that few do anymore. Our neighbors won’t go to church to hear the gospel, so we’ll come and sing it to them! 🙂
