Heavenly Heartburn

I remember as my children were smaller I would tuck them into bed and lay beside them and sing. One song I sang had the words, “Why didn’t we recognize the Son of God was here today? Didn’t our hearts burn as He talked along the way? Shouldn’t we have known, couldn’t we have known, wish we had known Him, before The Lord had come and gone.”

Luke 24:13-32
This Scripture speaks of the two on the road to Emmaus. Jesus joined them and began to speak. They didn’t know who he was and they began to share with Him what had happened and how their friend, Jesus, had died. He stayed and broke bread with them that night and their eyes were opened. After Jesus left them they said, “Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked along the way and opened the scriptures to us?”

How often have we found ourselves in the presence of Jesus and find our own hearts burning as He speaks to us through His word? If only our eyes could be opened daily to His presence as He walks and talks with us. If our hearts could burn with His passion. If we could burn with a desire to win the lost as He has called us to do. If we could burn with an urgency to reach the broken and hurting.

Too often I have found myself reading the Word or even be in His presence but my mind was so occupied with other things or busyness that I failed to recognize the burning in my heart. It is imperative that we are sensitive to those times in His presence that we hear His voice and follow His leading. We cannot get so carried away with everyday tasks and toiling or the burden of our circumstances that we do not hear Him say, “Come unto me and rest.” His voice will burn in our hearts if we will listen to Him. His Spirit will bring strength and comfort as He walks and talks with us each day.

Lord, help us to bask in your presence daily and feel that heavenly heart burn as you speak to us. Let us find strength and comfort as your Word comes alive in us. Let us burn with passion for more of you and to do your will.

Powerful message, Rese. You are right, we often miss His voice. He is there all along and I pray with you that I will feel my heart burn with His passion and love.
