Jesus Meets us Where we Are

It was a different kind of Easter Drama. Yesterday, my husband preached an illustated sermon like none other. While most Easter Sunday sermons are about the account of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and His resurrection, this year my husband took a look at Jesus through the eyes of His disciple Peter. Peter took us to the well in one of the scenes. You know, the famous well, where the Samaritan woman was found.

Most people would see a woman like her and not give her a second glance. They would just walk on by. After all, a woman who has had 5 husbands isn’t the sort of girl you want to be seen around town with, right? We don’t know her name, the Bible never mentions it, but Jesus took the time to go meet her where she was.

It was at the well where Jesus found her. Drawing water to fill her vessels, imagine the shock she felt when this Man spoke to her. Didn’t He know she was a Samaritan? It was the hottest part of the day and Jesus was tired and asked her if she would give Him a drink…

(John 4:9) “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman,” she reminded Him. “How can You ask me for a drink?”

While she focused on the rules, Jesus was focused on grace.

Grace is the very thing that people need and long for. Some people don’t know that’s what they need. The woman at the well didn’t know. But before the day was over she knew. Jesus could have easily walked on by but instead, He met her where she was.

Jesus wants to meet you where you are too. You may not have 5 husbands but I assure you, the nameless woman at the well represents you and me very well. While others overlook us and pass us by, God sees us and He will meet us by the well (or wherever we are) and His Grace will quench our thirst like never before.

(John 4:14) “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

BLESSINGS. Laurie
