Have You Lost Your Focus?

Focus. What’s it all about?

Dictionary.com defines focus as a central point, as of attraction, attention or activity. As a verb, focus means to concentrate.

In today’s world with all the uncertainty, at times I find it easy to lose my focus.  I get distracted by news reports of an uncertain economy, the worsening housing market, healthcare reform, sickness, disease, earthquakes, world disasters and unsaved loved ones.  It’s easy for my attention to become so focused on the problems.

As a Christian, I can focus on God and remember who my God really is.  I’ve been studying Ann Spangler’s “Praying the Names of God” for the past few weeks.  What a blessing this has been for me as I go through some challenging personal circumstances including selling a home and moving.

So far, I’ve learned that:

God is …Elohim, the mighty Creator of all things.  As I look at the stars in the sky and the birds in the air, I know that Elohim created them each one.

God is …El Roi, the God who sees me.  He never slumbers nor sleeps.  He knows every detail of my life.  Nothing is hidden from Him.

God is …El Shadday, God Almighty.  I know that nothing is impossible with my God.  No problem is too hard.

God is …El Olam, the Everlasting and Eternal God.  He is not bound by time and space.  He is eternal and He gives me the gift of eternal life through His Son, Jesus.

So I ask you.  In the midst of the storms of life have you lost your focus?  Are you worrying and wringing your hands?  Are you depressed over situations you feel you have no control?  Are you trying to control everything and everyone in your own power?

Allow me to make a few suggestions:

  • Focus on Jesus who is the author and perfector of our faith.
  • Read Scripture to remind yourself of who He is.
  • He is El Roi and sees all that is going on in your life.  You are not abandoned; He is with you through the storms of life.
  • Pray for His direction and for His strength to get your through the day or …the moment.
  • Learn the lessons God may be trying to teach you in the midst of your personal storm.
  • If there is unconfessed sin in your life …confess it and return to intimacy with God.
  • Praise Him for who He is even in the middle of the storm.
  • Reach out and encourage someone else who may be going through difficult times.
  • Remind yourself that you are a beloved child of God who loves you and cares about you.

With El Shadday …nothing is impossible.  Keep your focus on Him.

Blessings and love,

You know, the Scripture passage of Hebrews came to mind just last night; it is so powerful and so much truth. Keeping our eyes fixed on Him will help us through the storms. I also have to remember the Scripture passage in good times.

Thank you Debbie for sharing your wisdom with us.

This was great Debbie. You make some really good points and have a wonderful list of suggestions. It is soo easy to lose focus these days. Satan does whatever he can to keep us looking in the wrong direction as well. But when our eyes are focused on Him, and we read His Word everyday, how much clearer we can see. Thanks for this. Hugs, Deb

I amen that! I have come to realize that I am gaining my focus sooner, and I like that. Of course I am an old lady in the Lord, but still, it is a thrill to see what He has accomplished in me. I comes from knowing His word and being encouraged to walk in it from readings such as this. May many be blessed by though you.

Thank you for this wonderful devo Debbie to focus on Jesus. My anti spam word here was Hope. When we have him as our focus and hope, we can live at peace.

What a great reminder this is for me, Debbie! Thanks so much. Focus is actually my focus word for this year. I felt lately like I’ve lost focus in one of the areas I needed to focus on.

    Thanks for this timely reminder.

    Blessings.
