Love like the ocean

My family and I have been vacationing this past week at the beach. It is one of the highlights of our summer. There is nothing like the sound of the crashing waves hitting the shore to remind you of the power of God!

The ocean has always intrigued me. Even though the deep, murky waters can be very frightening, it can also be very calm. While on vacation, we took an excursion out on the deep, murky waters looking for dolphins. At first, the waters were very calm and inviting, but it only took about 20 minutes before the weather turned bad and we all became drenched in a downpour of rain. Just about the time we were going to turn around, we saw a break in the weather and we continued on.

Pressing thru the wind and raindrops was worth it, it wasn’t long before we came upon some dolphins. They were leaping up in the big waves stirred up by our boat. Once again, God showed me His breathtaking presence, even in the dark, murky waters around us.

As we looked out into the water, all I could see was darkness. We could not see what lurked about down under our boat. Thinking about that was quite a scary thought, but then, suddenly the most beautiful thing leaped up out of that dark water…one of the most beautiful creatures I have ever seen, a dolphin.

It is no wonder that the Bible refers to Gods love being like an ocean. If I had put my hand down into that water, there would be no way that the power in my hand would be able to stop the waves, nor would my eyes be able to see what lurks around in the darkness. I never would have dreamed that something so beautiful could come from something so dark.

Gods power is one that we cannot understand. Only God has the power to calm the sea. And the eyes to see what we cannot see. His love goes even deeper than the depths of the ocean. His love encompasses the dangers that lurk around us like the murky, dark waters. Only His love will surface something beautiful out of something unsettling or unexpected.

“So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And i pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people,  to grasp how wide and long and high and deep   is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge —that you may be filled   to the measure of all the fullness of God.” EPHESIANS 3:17-19

What a comforting thought, as I sat in the middle of the ocean this week, to realize that His love for me goes even deeper, and even wider than the ocean. And no matter what lurks around me that I may not be able to see, He is aware of it and even out of the darkest, muddiest place of my life, He has the power to spring up something beautiful…even when we least expect it.

May you feel the calm in your storm. May you see the beauty of what is unseen. May you feel the power of God in whatever waves of life you find yourself in.

May you fully understand that Gods love is truly like an ocean!

    I like to think about God’s love being like an ocean. And you gave us a wonderful visual Laurie. Dolphins are amazing and can be so fun to watch.
