Refined in the furnace
Physical transformation is painful. For instance, losing weight takes a lot of effort, discipline, denial, perseverance, and work. The results are great, but the process is painful. Spiritual transformation is even more painful. God has to peel back the layers of pride, selfishness, entitlement, dissatisfaction, and envy to reveal our sinful natures that need His transforming touch.
And I will put this third into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They will call upon my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are my people’; and they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’” Zechariah 13:9 ESV
God calls us His own, His people, only after the process of refining. During the refining process, when God removes those attitudes, behaviors, habits, and beliefs that do not honor Him, He is molding us into His image. After we have been refined, we will shine like silver, gleam like gold, and be called “my people” by our Lord.
So that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 1:7 ESV
Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tried you in the furnace of affliction. Isaiah 48:10
Who among us does not want to be transformed into Christ’s likeness? We all do. However, the process of transformation is often painful. I know God is transforming me, but I wish there were an easier path. As far as I can tell… there isn’t.
What fires has God brought you through? What has God used to transform you into His image?

He has worked on me through trials with my children and my job. I like to think of the children’s song, “He’s still working on me.” I choose to submit to the Holy Spirit. Thank you for the reminder.
Oh yes, my sons have been the source of a lot of angst, and spiritual growth!
You are right, Katie; it is not easy to be refined by God.
I think that my husband’s illness is refining me to become more patient and compassionate. It is not easy, but I think it is needed.
That’s so true, Iris. Illness, whether it’s ours or our loved one’s, is a great refiner.
We are all diamonds in the rough! I’m so glad that God chisels away my imperfections, even though it can be painful, there is always purpose. Good read today Katie.
Thanks, Laurie. I’m going through something painful now, and it helps to remember there is a purpose, and to be aware of how God wants to use it in my life for good.
