Sit, Walk, Stand – part 2

In my June 25 post I shared Watchman Nee’s thoughts on “Our Position in Christ.” Sitting at the feet of our Lord and Savior as Mary does in the story of Mary and Martha.

38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[f] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:38-42

“Though the Christian life begins with sitting, sitting is always followed walking. When once we have been well and truly seated and have found our strength in sitting down, then we do in fact begin to walk.” Watchman Nee, Sit Walk, Stand page 22.

Interesting enough the word walk is used eight times in Ephesians. It has two different meanings – one is movement as in to walk around and the other meaning is the our way of life, how we present ourselves in the world.

“I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4:1-3 NKJV

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:1-2 NIV

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.” Ephesians 5:8-10 NKJV

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.  Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” Ephesians 5:15-17

“Too many Christians have all the doctrine but live lives that are a contradiction of it. They know all about chapters 1-3 but they do not put chapters 4 to 6 into practice…May the Lord teach us that the whole principle of the Christian life is that we go beyond what is right to do that which is well-pleasing to Him.” Watchman Nee Sit Walk Stand page 33-34.

This whole idea of walk had me thinking about my fit bit. I think in today’s world we more concerned about how much we walk instead of how we walk. So I ask myself and you are we walking as a child of light, in the way of love, as someone who is wise?

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,  I press ontoward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Only let us live up to what we have already attained.” Philippians 3:12-16

“In light of all this, here’s what I want you to do. While I’m locked up here, a prisoner for the Master, I want you to get out there and walk—better yet, run!—on the road God called you to travel. I don’t want any of you sitting around on your hands. I don’t want anyone strolling off, down some path that goes nowhere. And mark that you do this with humility and discipline—not in fits and starts, but steadily, pouring yourselves out for each other in acts of love, alert at noticing differences and quick at mending fences.” Ephesians 4:1-3 The Message

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on our walk with the Lord. You are right; is is how we walk and not that we only talk. I hope that I walk in His light, always.

This is very true. I use an app to count my steps, but the” how “is more important. I love the Watchman Nee writings.
