Time for some cleaning
We cleaned out our closet a couple Saturdays ago. My husband worked a long time on his side and then I worked on my side. We found some things we could get rid of and got it looking nice in there. We could see the floor again! It is always such a good feeling to have it cleaned out.
I don’t like it to get messy, but sometimes it happens. I have already realized how fast it can go back to being messy. One night it was colder, and I wanted some warm pajamas which are stored in one of the tubs we had just moved up and off the floor. My husband got the tub down for me, and it stayed down for a couple of days. I noticed how with the tub there I was tempted to lay things on it instead of putting them immediately where they belong.
I thought how it is the same way with sin in our lives. The sin can be such a small thing and not feel like a big deal that we do not even notice it in our lives at first. It wasn’t a big deal for the tub to be back on the closet floor again for one night. But I noticed that it didn’t take any extra effort for it to remain there another night and then another. It took a little extra effort for my husband to lift it up and return it to the shelf.
How easy is it for us to see sin as innocent and not immediately remove it from our lives because we don’t feel any negative effects right away? Just as the closet gets cluttered, so can sin clutter our hearts. If I’m not paying attention to the closet, it will be a mess again soon. In the same way, I need to pay attention to my heart and make sure sin is not creeping in to take up residence. When this happens I am slowly moving away from God. It takes some effort to get rid of sin, but the results are definitely worth it.
Do you need to do some cleaning today….in your closet or your heart?
