Today’s forecast – “Cloudy, with a chance of blessing”

I use to dread cloudy days; the dreariness, the darkness, but not today. Today the clouds come as a welcomed friend, with the hope of a blessing. They carry God’s grace upon grace. They carry rain.

It’s absurd how I take some things for granted, things that I cannot live without, like water. I expect it to be there. But for many who live in other countries or those who are homeless living on the streets, taking it for granted is not a luxury they can afford. Thirst drives them to plan the next drink. Clean or dirty doesn’t matter as much if you don’t have a choice.

Jesus said, “For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name, because you belong to Christ, assuredly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.” Mark 9:41

I always thought the content to be superficial; a cup of water? I thought it only meant you could give the smallest thing in His name and it would count. Maybe that is because I have often taken water for granted (thinking it a small thing). Yet, as simple as a cup of water may seem to me, there would be no life without it. I’m reminded of this truth as I watch the ground dry up and crack, grass turn brown, and trees drop their leaves as the drought here in California continues. They are thirsty for God’s blessing. Just a cup of water.

This wonderful wetness no longer looks to me like a simple, superficial thing. Every drop is counted by someone somewhere. Every drop is a blessing poured out by the one who “pours out His blessing on the wicked and the just.” As I watch the clouds out my window grow darker, I know the blessing is coming, even in the darkness. No, especially in the darkness. He uses it to turn my eyes toward Him. When I look up, His blessings (this time in the form of rain drops), fall gently on my face.

I can see Him do this in other areas of my life. How about yours? He sends blessing in the dark or dry times as I look up and wait for Him. He shines His light, sends help, or makes it rain. The things in life we consider troubles come and go as often as the dawning of each new day, but perhaps our hearts would remain more hope-filled if we think of the dark day’s forecast in this way – Cloudy, with a chance of blessing.

Loved it! I think we can apply this same paradigm to many of life’s hard days, difficult days, perhaps a day when we have blown it and are down on ourselves. I have had that blessing come from God, through someone else when I least deserved it, by the way of flowers or an unexpected gift or kindness. Sometimes the blessing does not come that way and we don’t see it until later on but God in His grace will give a blessing in those times especially if we look for it. We CANNOT get away from His goodness no matter the circumstance.

So true, Charlotte. A cup of water can do a great thing, and can be refreshing to the parched and thirsty.
