What Are You Wearing Today?

 What Are You Wearing Today?

“Above all things put on LOVE.” Colossians 3:14

As you were dressing today, you probably faced the same kinds of choices I face when deciding what to wear. Questions usually run through my mind, such as, “What is the weather like outside? Where will I go today?” And sometimes, (I’m embarrassed to say) “Who will see me?”  If I’m staying home I put less thought into the process, but if I’m going somewhere or seeing other people, I usually take more time deciding.

Recently it was brought to my attention (as God has a way of doing) that I put a lot more effort into how I’m covering my body, than I do in covering my heart and mind – my thoughts and motives, in preparing myself for the day. It doesn’t matter nearly as much how well I dress on the outside if my heart is bare-bones naked and unprotected from the elements of temptation. The spiritual temperature outside is always stormy with a high chance of wind and rain because we have an adversary seeking to devour us. The weather on the inside can also be nasty because we have a fleshly nature that battles against our spiritual nature.

I must take the time to clothe myself in the garments Christ has provided. In Ephesians 6:11 Paul tells us,

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”

This is a daily thing he asks us to do, just like getting dressed. If we are to be clothed for the spiritual challenges of the day we must take the time to dress properly. When I visualize this process of spiritual preparation I see it in this way…

First – the armor; from head to toe.

“…having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation. And the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful…” Ephesians 6:14-18

This takes a while to do!

Then, before stepping out of the dressing room, put on the coat – LOVE. Love not only makes a good covering for ourselves, but it changes the way people see us and the way we see them.

Proverbs 10:12   says, “Love covers a multitude of sins.”
