You’re an Overcomer

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. John 16:33

I don’t need to tell anyone who is reading this – the world is full of trouble. Some of the other contributors to this blog have written of late on struggles they are encountering. We all face trials, hardship, and grief, and at times we can feel overwhelmed. I know I do. Yesterday after church I sat down and listened to a young woman who is facing trials in different areas of her life–at work, with her future plans, with her finances. She is overwhelmed. Have you even noticed how sometimes it is not the monumental problems which incapacitate us. The biggest obstacles we somehow get around, but then one “small” problem is added to our over-stressed lives, and we buckle. We can’t find an important document; the computer crashes; we get stuck in traffic; a friend says something which we take the wrong way.

There is good news. We are overcomers! Jesus has overcome and He enables us to overcome, too. A good friend of mine just recognized the one-year anniversary of her diagnosis of stage four colon cancer, a disease which took her mom’s life and devastated her older sister’s life. Even though she got regular colonoscopies, every two years, the cancer had spread into her liver, lung, pancreas, and spine. She went through three surgical procedures, eight rounds of intense chemotherapy, and one year later she is claiming Victory over cancer. Her doctors stand back in amazement at her recovery. She has overcome.

Of course, there will come a time when our lives on this earth will come to an end. But even then, we overcome. Because we are followers of Jesus, and He has overcome death and the grave, so shall we. Hallelujah!

When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.  But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:54-57

Everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.  1 John 5:4
