Lessons on Leadership from Joshua

Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified;; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

Have you been called into a position of leadership lately? Maybe it isn’t quite as huge as Joshua leading the whole nation of Israel to conquer and claim and promised land, but can you think of some area where God wants you lead the way for His people? It might be as a parent in the home, with young impressionable minds. Or perhaps, it’s in the workplace, where God is asking you to be a leader in front of your non-Christian colleagues. Is it a new ministry that God has asked you to lead?

No matter what the circumstances are, I’m sure you feel like I did when God asked me to do something bigger than myself. Nervous. Uncertain and painfully aware of my inadequacies. And, as a potential leader, I desperately needed the encouragement I found from Joshua’s story.

He wasn’t a young leader, but he was a new leader and he knew his task was historic. So, what did God tell him to start out with? He told him to stop shaking in his boots and find courage IN GOD.

And as the story progressed, God reminded Joshua of this message over and over again. Pretty soon, Joshua was repeating the same message again and again to the Israelites.

Joshua learned plenty of lessons along the road, but the biggest one was to step out in courageous faith and trust God to do the impossible.

Are you trusting God to do the impossible in your life today?

Joshua 1:9 has become one of my favorite verses from the Old Testament. I look to it often when I start to feel inadequate.
