Order from Chaos

The nightly trip to the bathroom wasn’t an unusual event but realizing that I was wide awake at 3:30 am and might as well get up for the day was an unusual idea. The day before I had moved from my home of the past thirty-four years into what had been my weekend house. For the past eighteen months I planned for this next chapter in my life – sorting, donating, selling, packing, organizing stuff. Lots of stuff. The once empty basement of my cabin was now full of  boxes and plastic bins. Random pieces of furniture placed in their new spots. Chaos was reining. There is an expression “how do you eat an elephant, one bite at a time” so at 3:30 am I started organizing one box at a time.

Today my pastor’s sermon was based on Genesis 1:1 – 2:4 with the main point being that God brings order out of chaos. Wow, could I relate to that. I so appreciate the opening words of the Bible are “In the beginning God…” God is the focus. He is the creator of order from chaos.

In his sermon notes, my pastor included a chart that I was familiar with and is wonderful tool for teaching and learning the days of creation. In the Genesis 1 creation story there were three days of separation, of forming the environments and then three days of filling, of creating the inhabitants.

Genesis 1 Order of Creation

Day

Environment Day Inhabitant

1

let there be light 4 separated day from night

2

Separated water from water 5

created birds and fish

3a

formed land 6a

created land animals

3b vegation 6b

created humans

The last question on Pastor Stephen’s sermon notes was “Who provides the order in your universe?” Definitely something to ponder.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” Genesis 1:1 -2

God bless you in this new chapter. Be careful in the journeys from basement to other floors. And rest a while along the way and revel in unscheduled joys.
