Shine His Light

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” ~ Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV)

The demands of work and family can get to us at times, and they can dim our light very quickly. So how can we let our light shine? First, we need to be plugged in to His Word, and not the world. Yesterday I started “Our Daily Bread” devotion to get a good start on my day. Getting up early enough to have peace and quiet is so worth it for me. Without His Word (and some coffee), I can’t face the day and let His light shine.

The second way to let His light shine, is to pray. I am not a prayer warrior like some of my friends. My prayers are short. Jesus talked about prayer in Matthew 6 and was very much to the point on what to say. One of my favorite parts of this prayers is this:

“Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.” ~ Matthew 6:10 (ESV)

You see, we need to be open to His leading. Even when darkness is all around us, He can use us to be His light. I know that sometimes we want to stick our head in the sand and let life take its course. However as His followers, we just can’t. No matter how hard it may be, we need to reach out, pointing to the Cross. We may experience resistance or even persecution when we share the Good News, however we need to continue to be fierce hearted, and share.

One of my current favorite songs is by “Stars Go Dim”, and it is called “Heaven On Earth”. Have a listen and be encouraged by the words so let your light shine.

Lord of Heaven and Earth. Let Your Kingdom come, and help me to let my light shine. In the precious name of Jesus. Amen.

Thank you for the reminder of our purpose. Sometimes the lens or lantern of our testimony needs to be cleaned and redirected outward.

Loved that song Iris. You are right, before we can go out and shine our light, we need to make sure our batteries are charged with God’s Word and prayer.
