Those Small Details
Does God care about the little details?
Several years ago, through various circumstances, our family was faced with a decision to take a trip. Yes, this seems silly, nothing of major importance, nothing really worth grappling a prayerful decision over. Take a vacation or not, really not the things you think might be a concern to God.
Well, it was a great concern for me. It was a huge decision. See, my husband was out of work and there was no sign of employment on the horizon. How could we vacation and then expect God to help us out in tough circumstances?
I wasn’t willing go without praying and I asked for a specific answer, a small detail that on the surface seemed unimportant. To me, however, it was everything. God graciously answered my prayer and provided for our trip financially in a way that proved to be an amazing blessing.
Throughout scripture, God affirms that he does indeed care about those minor details. Remember, each word is inspired, so the Lord wants us to learn something from what He gave us. For example, take a look at Esther 1. As the inspired Word of God, there are some elaborate details here that God wants us to take notice of:
There were white cotton curtains and violet hangings fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rods and marble pillars, and also couches of gold and silver on a mosaic pavement of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl and precious stones. Drinks were served in golden vessels, vessels of different kinds, and the royal wine was lavished according to the bounty of the king.
(Esther 1:6-7 ESV)
This vivid description God has placed in scripture is there to let us know more about him, his character, his attention to detail. That is not included by accident.
Sometimes those small details seem frivolous or unimportant, as if we shouldn’t bother God with insignificant things. But a God who can describe so beautifully a banquet in Esther, tells us in 1 Peter:
casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
(1 Peter 5:7 ESV)
He didn’t say cast only important cares but ALL our cares.
Further, in Luke, Jesus says,
Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.
(Luke 12:7 ESV)
If God has numbered the hair on our heads and has said we have more value than many sparrows, then God cares greatly for all the details in our life.
I know this concept can seem impossible to grasp. I remember sharing this very idea with a friend who is self admittedly not a believer. She was simply blown away with the idea that the God of the universe cares how her day is going.
So yes, when the kids are screaming, the house is a mess, any resemblance of a lavish banquet in Esther vanished after the birth of your first child and your ready to hide in a corner and cry – God cares. He sees it, he knows it, and he does indeed care.
God gives us affirmations in His word. He gives us details in His story so we can know His attention is focused on completing our story – down to the smallest detail.
