After The Election

The United States Presidential election is over.  The ballots have been received.  Our current President has been reelected.  The people of our country have spoken.

But what happens if the outcome wasn’t what you hoped for or expected?

Let me share a secret with you.  The answer to all of our country’s problems can’t be solved by politicians.  Yes, they lead our country.  And yes, it’s very important to vote. But God sits on the throne.  He is in control.  And He wasn’t surprised by the results of our election.

Many years ago, the prophet Jeremiah wrote a letter to the exiled Jewish people living in Babylon under the rule of King Nebuchadnezzar.  They weren’t happy.

Jeremiah 29: 4-7 (NLT) says:

4This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says to all the captives he has exiled to Babylon from Jerusalem: 5“Build homes, and plan to stay. Plant gardens, and eat the food they produce.6Marry and have children. Then find spouses for them so that you may have many grandchildren. Multiply! Do not dwindle away! 7And work for the peace and prosperity of the city where I sent you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, for its welfare will determine your welfare.”

Jeremiah was a prophet of the Lord.  He shared Truth and not what the people wanted to hear.  But he encouraged them to live even in the midst of challenging circumstances.  And did  you catch what he wrote in verse 7?  They were to work for the peace and prosperity of the city.  And they were to …PRAY!

That’s what we can do for our county.  That’s what we can do for our President.  Pray, pray, pray.

As Christians, we need to be about the work the Lord has called us to do.  Teach our children.  Share the Gospel.  Live a life that glorifies the Lord.  Share the love of Jesus.  Shine His light in the midst of this world.  The Lord has a plan.  He is not defeated.

Jeremiah 29: 12-13 (NLT) says:

12In those days when you pray, I will listen. 13If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.

God has lessons for us to learn.  But we must listen.

So live your lives.  Pray about all things.  Pray for our country.  And pray for our elected officials.

Blessings and love,

While my disappointment abates, I am mindful that world rulers cannot bring about the sort of change that only God can institute. I am reminded that His Kingdom (and subjects) are not of this world; and that we are one day nearer His making that change on earth, as it is in heaven. I am comforted.

Powerful reminder Debbie what we ought to do as His followers, to pray. I really like the passages you have shared from the prophet Jeremiah.

I am responsible for opening devotions for a Stephen Ministry group meeting the day after the upcoming election. Regardless of the voting outcome, this is PERFECT!
